This Week's Artistic Endeavors - Rehearsal Dinners

ree

Live guest portraits for the rehearsal dinner might be my new favorite. It is a great way to add an interactive component to the night before and create an opportunity to easy mingling among the wedding party and the almost in-laws!

I did my first live painting event at a rehearsal dinner last weekend and I am excited to share this idea with future brides and planners who may want to add a live painting component to the event.

Personally Speaking... from AI to hand-cut cardboard

ree

AI action figures were recently a popular trend. I have seen a variety of artists and teachers I follow create variety versions of this trend using their art medium or as a classroom-friendly activity.

I decided it would be fun to create a cardboard cutout action figure, with vibes that hold reminisce of a paper doll. I cut out all the pieces with thin cardboard, like cereal boxes, and then am creating the clothing and textures using "fancy papers" and construction paper that I have drawn or painted on. I love this as a piece of folk art, using found materials. I like the idea of making a family of the cutouts and framing them.

I also really like the juxtaposition this takes from the "AI action figure." The competing methods from AI created to actually hand cutting out every last piece from the hair to the clothing to the hands, it has such a stark contrast that it feels like the entire project holds a much deeper meaning.

I am excited to bring this idea to my students to offer. I could see them creating their own action figure as maybe who they want to become or showcasing them after achieving their goals and dreams.

Artists Supporting Artists -

Chelsea Paints

ree

Chelsea is a Knoxville muralist who specializes in painting seasonal window art! You can see her art all around town on the shops and businesses that you love.

Not only does she do window art, but she paints traditional murals and offers commissioned paintings as well.

I love her broad spectrum of artistry and how real she presents herself on her platforms! I highly suggest reaching out to her if you are wanting a mural painted or some window art put up at your storefront.

Be Your Most Creative Self

ree

I have an obsession with cookie cutters. Anytime I see an interesting cookie cutter, I buy it. Not to necessarily use for baking cookies, but because I like the idea of having a shape to use to make a cut out or a mold.

I spotted a butterfly cookie cutter Walgreens bought it. It's been sitting on my desk at school for the past month or so and I often think of what projects I could make with it. Typically, my brain is headed toward 3D type projects with a cookie cutter, so I was already driving in that direction for ideas.

A few weeks ago, one of my students started Googling and drawing all different species of butterflies in rows on a piece of paper.

She was coloring each one of them uniquely and it was really compelling, but not quite a finished, piece of art. I mean, they were just rows of butterflies... not much of a composition. I told her she should cut them out and collage them in some way. Well, her outcome was terrific. She folded and hot glued each of them to a piece of paper to make them "flying" off the page.

And that is how the idea for my butterfly cookie cutter project was planted! I am going to use this little cookie cutter to cut and mold clay butterflies. I plan to add in unique textures and patterns onto each one, then glaze, and fire in the kiln! I will design them to be hangable on the wall as miniature ceramic butterflies. I don't totally reinvent the wheel, so of course I go to Google to try and push my idea with image floods and inspiration from other artists. Excitedly enough, Mackenzie-Childs, luxury home and decor designer, has a line of ceramic butterflies already! I loved looking through the series for inspiration. I linked them below to purchase! I definitely will be getting myself a set. Personally, I envision mine having a little bit more of a folky-boho vibe, so I am excited to see my finished product and hand in the work!

All that to say... allow yourself to find creativity in the little, random things, like a Walgreens cookie cutter. I believe that art is everywhere around us, we just have to be open to finding it and enjoying the possibility of creativity in our lives!

In case you wanted to join me on this artistic endeavor of creating mini ceramic butterflies from a cookie cutter, or honestly, any cookie cutter shape, I linked a simple hand-building demo video below! You can do this project with air dry clay (also linked!)
